I am an electrician: what are the risks?

The first risk that comes to my mind is of course electric shock.

This is indeed a fatal risk.

In other words, operations must only be performed by a trained professional,
having solid qualifications and under authorisation.

But an electrician's intervention also brings other risks.

 * Electrical risks, work under voltage:

  - I wear latex insulating gloves (check the utilisation voltage
and that the shelf life of the gloves has not expired)
  - I wear leather overgloves with a fastening to protect the latex gloves
  - I am equipped with an insulating face shield with protective visor (protection against electric arc)
   - I use protective shoes with electrical properties
      - symbol "P" = conductive shoes (the electrical resistance of the
conductive shoes must not be higher than
                              100 kΩ.)
      - symbol "A" = anti-static shoes (electrical resistance must
be higher than 100 kΩ and lower or equal to
                             1000 MΩ
                             (the mark S1, S2 or S3 covers anti-static
                             properties)
      - symbol "I" = insulating shoes (class O or OO)

- My clothing is preferably in flame-resistant plastic-mercerised cotton

 - Other risks: I do not always work under voltage.
It is moreover always preferable to work without voltage.
During my activity I am exposed to other possible risks:

 - Explosion, fires, burns, etc.

I preferably use standards-compliant equipment (ATEX area)

EN ISO 11612: Clothing that protects against heat and flames (*).

EN ISO 61482: Clothing that protects against the thermal effects
 of an electric arc (*).

- Risks of falling while working at elevation (*)

- I wear equipment against falling from a height
(harness, safety straps, energy absorber, etc.)

 - Respiratory risk:

On some building sites the electrician may work in environments
that are polluted by dusts (cement, concrete, timber, etc)
I use single-use filtering masks (*).

- Work when kneeling:

   I wear knee pads (*)

- Cut, graze during various handling operations and need for dexterity

I use protective gloves, for example CFT HPT coating (*) etc.

 - Cold, rain, sun:

When a building site is outside I am subjected to weather conditions:
if need be I am equipped with a bodywarmer against the cold, a parka, rain wear, sun glasses, (*) etc.

(*) in all these cases, if using several items of PPE, check that they are compatible and that each
of them offers effective protection against the risks you will be exposed to.

The products suggested under this rubric may help the user when choosing personal protection equipment.

The test results may also help when choosing personal protection equipment.

However, it is understood that real conditions of use cannot be simulated.

It is therefore the responsibility of the user (and not of the manufacturer or its representative) to determine whether this product selection is suitable for the envisaged use.

Be aware that no PPE, even when compliant with one or more standards, offers an absolute guarantee of safety and protection.

In all cases, before performing any operation that could jeopardise your health or safety, it is indispensable that you perform a risk appraisal, that you envisage all possible preventive solutions, that you draw up an emergency plan if necessary, have the required qualifications and are familiar with the safety guidelines.

For safety and hygiene reasons, PPE is always for invidivual use.
