What is leather?

It is a natural material obtained from the tanning of animal skins.

The transformation of skins into leather goes back a long way in human history!

Different kinds of skin are used and each responds to different levels of resistance and flexibility.

Cow skin leather offers good mechanical resistance while retaining appreciable flexibility.

Sheep skin leather is characterized by great flexibility (much sought after for fine handling).
On the other hand, its mechanical resistance is limited.

Goat skin is a good compromise between bovine and lamb.

We use:

- the external surface of the dermis = grain

- or the internal surface = split

The grain (0.70 mm to 0.90 mm) has very good flexibility and great dexterity for work requiring precision and touch.

The thicker split (1.10 mm to 1.30 mm in general) offers good mechanical resistance.

It is generally used for heavier work, but also for welders.

Leather is a noble and natural material which brings many advantages: comfort, breathability, resistance ...

Certain specific treatments give it additional characteristics: fire resistance, water repellency, oil repellency, etc.

Thanks to its many advantages, leather (grain or split) is still widely used in PPE for a variety of equipment: gloves, shoes, welding clothing, hoods, etc.
