Protective gloves - General requirements and test methods

This document specifies the general requirements and relevant test procedures for glove design and construction, innocuousness, comfort and efficiency, as well as the marking and information supplied by the manufacturer applicable to all protective gloves.

It can also apply to arm protectors and gloves permanently incorporated in containment enclosures.

Gloves and hand protectors such as mittens, pot holders and arm protection are covered by this document.

This document does not address the protective properties of gloves and therefore is not used alone but only in combination with the appropriate specific standard(s). A non-exhaustive list of these standards is given in the Bibliography.

 
 
EN ISO 21420: 2020 replaces EN 420: 2001 + A1: 2009.
However, all certificates for gloves certified according to standard EN 420: 2001 + A1: 2009 remain valid until the end of their validity.
 
 
The EN ISO 21420: 2020 standard includes the usual requirements for all protective gloves with, however, here are some new features:
 
Innocuousness
The chromium VI content for leather gloves should be less than 3.0 mg / kg (no change).
Carcinogenic azo dyes must not be detectable.
Metallic materials in contact with the skin must have a nickel release <0.5 µg / cm2 per week
The pH of all materials must be 3.5 and 9.5 (no change)
The amount of DMFa (Dimethylformamide) in gloves containing PU should be <1000 mg / kg.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) containing in rubbers and plastics should not exceed 1 mg / kg.
 
Gloves size
There are no longer any minimum lengths.
The size of a glove is specified according to the size of the hand the glove must fit.
 
Marking and user information
In addition to the usual marking, the date of manufacture (at least the month and year) must be mentioned.
If necessary, the obsolescence date must also appear.

Now, if the glove has electrostatic properties and is tested according to EN 16350 for use in an explosive atmosphere, the corresponding pictogram must be used.

When marking is not possible on the glove, it must appear on the packaging.
In addition to the usual information to be communicated, indications must be provided on how to put on the glove, its removal, its maintenance ...
If the glove contains rubber, this must be mentioned.
