Cleaning of vats, cisterns, etc. What are the risks?

I have to inspect, operate in vats, cisterns, reservoirs.

I work in confined spaces, with little or no light, poorly ventilated, etc.

They may be fixed vats or cisterns (fuel vat) or mobile ones (on vehicles).

This equipment is used to store, transport, all sorts of goods, solid, liquid or gaseous, hazardous or otherwise.

RISKS

Risk of falling from a height, slipping
While operating on the outside of vats or inside vats
I use equipment to protect against falls from a height.
I wear protective shoes with anti-slip soles.

Chemical and respiratory risk
Associated with product residues in vats.
I use a breathing mask (preferably insulating), protective gloves, goggles, overalls, etc.

Explosion risk
I check the ATEX regulations, the risk appraisal and the prevention plan.

Risk of falling objects
When several operators work at different heights.
I wear a protective face shield and I use equipment to avoid falling objects.

Risks associated with working in a confined space
Asphyxia, anoxia, hypoxia.
I wear a protective face shield or a crash helmet, respiratory protection, clothing, gloves, I have a means of communication, etc.

The test results may also help when choosing personal protection equipment.

However, it is understood that real conditions of use cannot be simulated.

It is therefore the responsibility of the user (and not of the manufacturer or its representative) to determine whether this product selection is suitable for the envisaged use.

Be aware that no PPE, even when compliant with one or more standards, offers an absolute guarantee of safety and protection.

In all cases, before performing any operation that could jeopardise your health or safety, it is indispensable that you perform a risk appraisal, that you envisage all possible preventive solutions, that you draw up an emergency plan if necessary, have the required qualifications and are familiar with the safety guidelines.

For safety and hygiene reasons, PPE is always for invidivual use.
