I am a roadworks operator; what are the risks?

I undertake various maintenance works on roads, road systems, engineering structures and things that go with them: verges, ditches, signage, etc. in order to guarantee users an efficient and safe road network.

I generally work outside, close to traffic.

The activities are varied and sometimes differ according to the season.

For example, I perform ditch cleaning operations, prune and mow vegetation.

In the winter I take part in gritting and clearing snow from the roads.

In the spring, I repair roads often damaged by the gritting operations.

Coatings, verges are renewed, pot holes are smoothed out and vegetation is checked.

The risks:

The risks are many and varied according to activity

Risks associated with movements on the road and the presence of building site machinery and road vehicles

Most often working on the road, I use high-visibility clothing.

Presence of road signage.

Risks of cuts, burns etc.

While handling materials, doing maintenance work, etc.

While cleaning the road in the event of accidents or abandoned objects (glass, cartons, etc.).

Depending on my activities, I use gloves that are suitable for the risks I encounter.

Gloves against cutting, against grazing, heat, hazardous products, etc.

Gloves against hazardous materials (cement, grits, crop protection products, hot tarmac products, etc.).

Protective clothes against the above risks as well as breathing protection if need be,

highly protective shoes, facial protection (face shield with full visor).

Risks associated with weather conditions

Clothing against the cold, against the rain, sunglasses, gloves against the cold, caps, etc.
