I am an airport runway operator; what are the risks?

My profession can comprise several activities.

The first that comes to mind is preparation before landing of all equipment that is needed to make sure the stopover goes smoothly.
I guide the aircraft to its parking spot.
I put the wedges under the wheels of the landing gear before the plane comes to a complete halt.
I may have to act as a baggage handler, tractor driver.
I have to use machinery: load conveyors, lifts, road vehicles, etc.

Risk of poor visibility
It is essential to be clearly seen on the ground.
I therefore wear high-visibility clothing.

Risk of noise
On the runway I am confronted with an extreme noise level.
I wear ear plugs and/or anti-noise headbands.

Thermal risk
Outside I am subject to the weather conditions: cold, heat, sun, etc.
I therefore wear varied clothing if need be: bodywarmer, parka, gloves, sunglasses etc.

Handling
During my activity I have to handle baggage items, drive carts, etc.
I wear protective gloves for handling.
I wear a crash helmet or a face shield to protect me against the risk
of falling objects.

Risks connected to movements
During my activity I walk on the runways, in the hangars and terminals etc.
I wear solid and hard-wearing shoes.

The test results may also help when choosing personal protection equipment.

However, it is understood that real conditions of use cannot be simulated.

It is therefore the responsibility of the user (and not of the manufacturer or its representative) to determine whether this product selection is suitable for the envisaged use.

Be aware that no PPE, even when compliant with one or more standards, offers an absolute guarantee of safety and protection.

In all cases, before performing any operation that could jeopardise your health or safety, it is indispensable that you perform a risk appraisal, that you envisage all possible preventive solutions, that you draw up an emergency plan if necessary, have the required qualifications and are familiar with the safety guidelines.

For safety and hygiene reasons, PPE is always for invidivual use.
