Which responsibilities are involved?
 
A - For the manufacturers and distributors:

The CEE Directive defines the different PPE categories, the certification procedure and fixes, by regulation, minimum standards to which a product must conform if it is to be put on sale within the European Market; it refers to specific European Standards which define the technical requirements which the product should attain.

- EEC Directive 89/686 21st December 1989 "concerning the rapprochement of Member States relative to individual protection equipment".

- EEC Directive 93/68 22nd July 1993 modifying CEE Directive 89/686 21st December 1989 relative to marking standards.

- EEC Directive 96/58 3rd September 1996 modifying EEC Directive 89/686 21st December 1989.

B - For PPE users:

The regulations stipulate the obligation of employers to supply individual protective equipment whenever the risk involved cannot otherwise be avoided either by collective protective technical means or by such measures, methods or processes concerning the organisation of the workplace.

- EEC Directive 89/656 30th November 1989 concerning minimum security and health measures for the use by employees working with individual protection equipment.
