What do the 3 PPE categories correspond to? |

Minor risk PPE
The directive 89/686/CEE
defines this category as
following: "where the
designer assumes the user
can himself assess the level
of protection provided against
the minimal risks concerned
the effects of which, when
they are gradual, can be
safely identified by the
user in good time".
The "PPE" of this
category are exempt from
the EC type examination.
The manufacturer prepares
a technical file and an
completes an EC declaration
of conformity for minor
risks.

Intermediate
design PPE
These are the PPE which
don't belong to the category
I nor to the category II
The manufacturer prepares
a technical file and undertake
an EC type examination to
a notified body.
After getting the EC type
examination certificate
from the notified body,
the manufacturer or his
representative completes
and EC declaration of conformity
for intermediate category. |

Complexe design PPE
The directive 89/686/CEE
defines this category
as following: "(...)intended
to protect against mortal
danger or against dangers
that may seriously and
irreversibly harm the
health, the immediate
effects of which the designer
assumes the user cannot
identify in sufficient
time".

In addition of the technical
file and the EC type examination,
the "PPE" of
this category are subject
to the "EC"
quality control system
for the final product
or the system for ensuring
EC quality of production
by means of monitoring.
After getting the EC type
examination certificate
from the notified body,
the manufacturer or his
representative completes
and EC declaration of
conformity for "complex
design".
All the PPE must hold,
among other things, the
marking and must be accompanied
of a user information
sheet.
